Physiotherapy After Knee Replacement in Cammeray

A knee replacement can give you a new lease on life in the long run, but we know it’s a process and that it is a journey full of ups and downs, even after surgery. The work you do in the weeks and months afterwards has a big influence on how well your new knee moves and how quickly you get back to walking, driving and doing your favourite activities. Our team in Cammeray provides physiotherapy after a knee replacement, to guide you through every stage of the recovery, making sure you have more ups than downs, and that you have ongoing confidence with regards to your direction and rehabilitation.

Why physio after knee replacement matters

After a total knee replacement, the knee is often swollen, stiff and weak. Physiotherapy helps you:

  • Regain knee bend and straightening as early as possible
  • Reduce swelling and manage pain
  • Rebuild strength in your thigh, hip and calf muscles
  • Walk with a normal pattern and progress off walking aids as appropriate
  • Return to stairs, driving, work, travel and recreation
  • Build confidence and reduce the risk of falls
Before surgery: prehab

Knee replacement physiotherapy can start before your operation. Building strength and range of motion before surgery, and knowing what to expect, can make the early weeks of recovery easier. We can also help you prepare your home and practise using crutches or a frame.

We also have a group class: Resilient Knees/The Knee Hour which focuses on helping people delay the need for a knee replacement by strengthening their lower body muscles and counteracting functional challenges.

Total knee replacement physiotherapy: stages of recovery
Every person and every surgeon’s protocol is different, and we follow your surgeon’s guidance. As a general guide:

Weeks 0 to 2: early recovery
Most people start walking with an aid within a day or so of surgery and begin gentle exercises in hospital. Once home, the focus is on managing swelling, getting the knee fully straight and gradually improving bend.

Weeks 2 to 6: building movement and strength
Outpatient physio after knee replacement usually becomes more active during this stage. We progress your range of motion, strength and walking, and help you reduce your reliance on walking aids.

Weeks 6 to 12: returning to daily life
As strength improves, we focus on balance, stairs, longer walks and returning to activities like driving (when cleared by your surgeon), gardening and light exercise.

Three months and beyond
Many people continue to improve for up to 12 months after surgery. We can help you return to activities such as golf, bowls, cycling, swimming and bushwalking.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start physio after a knee replacement?

Physio usually begins in hospital, often the day of or the day after surgery. Outpatient physio typically starts soon after discharge, depending on your surgeon’s instructions and whether you attend inpatient rehab.

How much should my knee bend after a knee replacement?

Most people aim to get the knee fully straight and to bend it to around 120-125 degrees, which allows comfortable stair climbing and getting in and out of the car. Your physio will track your progress.

Is physio after knee replacement painful?

Some discomfort is normal, particularly in the early weeks. We work with you to find the right balance between pushing your progress and managing pain and believe this is the key to a quality rehab process. We will liaise with your surgeon or GP if your pain is not well controlled.

Is physiotherapy covered by private health insurance?

Outpatient physiotherapy is usually claimable under private health extras cover. Extras cover can also cover group classes.
